Run just in the browser

Save and run project commands as recipes in a justfile — a simpler alternative to make for tasks.

catalog app

Run a justfile recipe

Installs just 1.54.0 from the signed catalog (every chunk is verified before it is written), then runs the commands below in the VM's shell.

bash
just --version
just --list
just greet nano
loading…
Expected output
$ just --version
just 1.54.0
$ just --list
Available recipes:
    greet name # Say hello
$ just greet nano
echo "hello, nano"
hello, nano

What it is

just reads recipes from a justfile and runs them, with arguments, dependencies between recipes, variables and .env loading, but without make's file-timestamp semantics. In NanoVM the recipe lines run in the BusyBox shell, so a project's task runner works in the browser too.

Install and run it from your page

With the SDK, installApp resolves just in the signed index, fetches its content-addressed chunks from the CDN, verifies each one and writes the files into the VM. Details in Installing catalog apps.

javascript
import { createNano } from "@userland-run/nano-sdk";

const nano = await createNano({ image: { wasm: "/nano/console.wasm" }, ramMB: 512 });
await nano.installApp("just"); // signature-verified, cached in OPFS

const r = await nano.shExec("just --version");
console.log(r.stdout);

Typical usage of the upstream command-line tool:

bash
just test
